Change is the only Constant

Some people say we're living through a time of great change happening at great speed. But is that really true?

Payroll is always changing, but employees have always needed to be paid.

Change is not a new concept… look at the 1900s… the telegraph, the telephone and the motor car.

It's not that long ago you couldn't Google anything.

We’ve been through an explosion of change yet the essentials haven't changed at all.

Power hourPower Hour
Paid Parental Leave

Have you been ignoring the new Government Paid Parental Leave Scheme and hoping that none of your employees would have a child?

In this POWER HOUR session get a quick update on everything you need to know about this new Government scheme.

* Who is eligible for the payment
* Paperwork
* Frequency of payments
* Keeping in touch days
* Deadlines and schedules

As an extra bonus TAPS will highlight the differences between the Government scheme and your employer funded scheme.

- Leave accruals
- Superannuation
- Payroll Tax

NES Leave – oh no, not that grey area!!!

As payroll professionals we are all familiar with the basic principles of leave entitlements under the NES. However, with new legislation comes confusion when interpreting new requirements. In this session we provide answers to those tricky leave questions:

- Do we accrue leave when an employee is on Workers' Compensation?
- My employee needs a day off because they don’t have child care. Is that annual or carer’s leave?
- How frequently can an employee use compassionate leave?
- Do employees accrue leave when on leave? What about leave without pay?
- What are the rules for Jury Duty?

HOT TOPICHOT TOPIC
Superannuation

Even the most conscientious payroll professionals may inadvertently fail to meet their SG liability. As superannuation is constantly changing, attend this session to ensure you remain compliant.

- Ordinary Time Earnings
- Reportable Employer Superannuation Contributions
- Concessional Contribution Caps
- Total package -v- Base + super
- Future proofing your contracts in preparation for the SG increases in 2013

HOT TOPICHOT TOPIC
Terminations

Terminations can be one of the most complex calculations you will do in payroll.

The new Flood Levy is an extra complication to the process.

- Calculation of leave entitlements
- Correct taxation
- Allocation to the payment summary
- ETP components (transitional and non-transitional)
- Severance pay and lump sum D
- Death of an employee

Managing Superannuation Choice-of-Fund

Over the past couple of years the Government has been doing a comprehensive review of the superannuation system. SuperStream is the name given to the package of proposals for improving the processing of everyday superannuation transactions.

From a payroll perspective, the Government plans to encourage the use of technology to improve processing efficiency and improve the way employer contributions are made to the fund.

In this session you will learn about the proposed changes the Government wants to introduce.

With the proposed changes in mind, this session also covers your current obligations under choice-of-fund.

- Getting money to the relevant fund by the appropriate deadline
- Passing TFNs to the fund or RSA
- Meeting your choice obligations
- Dealing with difficult funds
- Rejecting an employee's choice request

We will also look at ways to streamline choice-of-fund

- DIY or Clearing House
- Selecting a Clearing House

Long Service Leave

When you travel around Australia, it is in the hope that things will be different in each place you visit.

These differences are also the case with LSL. This tour around Australia provides a comprehensive look at those differences.

- Entitlements and pro-rata
- Ordinary pay calculations
- Domestic and pressing necessity
- Changing employment status between full-time, part-time and casual
- Employees transferring between states (and countries)

Excel Masterclass - Presented by New Horizons Learning Centres.

Excel is payroll’s best friend. Are you getting the best out of your spreadsheets? In this session we cover some advanced excel concepts and provide you with some helpful hints and tips.

- Macros
- Linked spreadsheets
- “if” statements

This session will be presented using Excel 2007.

Easy, I know this!

We all say “Easy, I know this!”, but do we?

Payroll can be mind boggling and it is impossible to know everything. This session will cover hints and tips about the payroll issues that cause the most confusion and generate the most questions for example.

- Employee or contractor
- Payslips
- Amended payment summaries

Building a Stronger Payroll

Every process contains delays, rework and waste that has a negative effect on your employees and your business.

Are you still using spreadsheets, sticky notes and legacy systems to perform routine payroll tasks?

Now is the time payroll professionals should be re-assessing their current processes and tools and seriously looking at opportunities to become more efficient, accessible and cost effective.

This session will show you where dramatic improvements can be found that will help you build a stronger payroll.

Power hourPower Hour
Preparing for an Audit

With both internal and external audits, the auditing process never seems to end for the payroll department.

For most payroll professionals, the audit process is one of uncertainty, unpredictability, and uneasiness.
And as scary as the audit process appears, it is even more concerning when an audit does not go well.

- How do you prepare?
- What is required of you?
- What should you say?
- What shouldn’t you say?
- What authority does the auditor have?
- How will your company be affected when the audit is over?

If you don’t have the answers to these questions, this should be on your “must attend” list!

Unfair Dismissal

One of the most difficult tasks a manager faces is terminating an employee. Whether it is for redundancy, poor performance or serious and wilful misconduct, a manager must be sure that they have put in place proper procedures and cover substantive fairness to ensure the company does not fail should the termination be challenged before Fair Work Australia.

This briefing will cover the following matters:

- Identifying legal issues pertaining to dismissing an employee

- What makes a termination a “genuine” redundancy

- How to ensure your terminations are not considered “harsh, unjust or unreasonable” even when the reason is valid

- Cases that highlight what is and is not considered an “unfair” termination

- Exposure to adverse action claims

Month End: Balancing your Payroll

Every business depends on accurate payroll information to manage the financial obligations of the organisation.

Learn about the general ledger side of payroll and discover the way to have a stress-free month end.

- Leave accruals and provisions
- Standard payroll entries
- Reconciliations
- Payroll liabilities

Understanding & Managing the Risk of Payroll Fraud

Whether we're in good economic times or bad, fraud is an assumed risk and undoubtedly one of the top 10 “stay awake” issues for most organisations.

Given that prevention – rather than detection – is the best deterrent against fraud, this session will cite real-life cases to illustrate what controls failed or were absent that enabled the fraud to occur. It will also cover the indicators or red flags employers need to look out for to effectively manage this risk – and beat the fraudster at his own game!

Expats: In & Out of Australia

Taxation obligations for globally mobile employees continue to grow in complexity and can be challenging, especially from a payroll perspective.

Many questions arise:

- Where will they pay tax?
- What country should pay them?
- What forms must be completed?
- What about LAFHA?

and the list goes on…

This session aims to help you answer these questions and give you a better understanding of what you should be thinking about when your company sends an Australian employee overseas or brings an overseas employee to Australia.

FBT: Are you at risk?

The ATO have significantly ramped up their FBT compliance and audit activities. For employers, this increased activity is a clear warning to review company FBT obligations sooner rather than later. The level of FBT compliance activity we are seeing is unprecedented.

With a particular focus on Living Away From Home Allowances, Cars, Car Parking, Entertainment and Minor Benefits, the ATO have signalled an increased level of scrutiny on FBT, across all business segments.

How compliant are you? Attend this session and review your FBT obligations and procedures.
